Climate change and effects from carbon emissions are costing the world 1.6% of its annual gross domestic product, or about $1.2 trillion, a new report suggests.
That will double to 3.2% by 2030 if the world fails to act on climate change, says the Climate Vulnerability Monitor report by non-profit DARA and the Climate Vulnerable Forum, a cooperation group of about 20 developing countries.
While less developed countries are typically hit hardest, major economies like the United States, China and India will also see significant losses in GDP without more action on carbon emissions, the report notes.
Climate change and what the group calls "a carbon-intensive economy" are also responsible for five million deaths every year, from hunger and disease and air pollution, it says.
For the Monitor, the group uses current scientific research and field research to measure climate change impact in 184 countries, using indicators such as environmental disasters, and health impacts.

Anabel Elizabeth Baigrie Frutkin

92, of Indianapolis, formerly of Florida and Cleveland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2011. She was born in Toronto, Canada on October 9, 1919, the only child of father, John Baigrie, a native of Scotland, and mother, Kathleen (nee Millett). She was a child of the Great Depression, whose parents left Canada to look for work in Cleveland, OH. Raised in the winters by a great aunt, Dodie Foster, in the Cabbagetown section of Toronto, she spent her summers in Windsor, Ontario with her aunt Musette Dane, whose husband Ted was the commodore of the Windsor Yacht Club.

Anabel is survived by her loving husband, Reynold Joseph (known by all as "Rennie"), with whom she shared a wonderful life for 74 years. Anabel, a woman of boundless energy, worked during WWII in aircraft production, and ran a successful catering business in Cleveland after the war. Anabel was known for her marvelous cooking and her down-to-earth humor exemplified by her many old-time sayings. (On seeing overpriced goods, she would always say: Not all the bandits live in Mexico!) Anabel and Rennie were great partners on the dance floor and in life.

Anabel is also survived by her children, Reynold Jr (Ann) and Larry (Dolores), both of Indianapolis; Mark (Faith) of Ottowa, Canada; Marilyn (James) Grace of Toronto, Canada; and cousins, Anne (Sam) Johnston of Pickering, Ontario and Lila Rew of Toronto, Ontario. Anabel had 11 grandchildren (5 in Canada, 6 in the U.S.) and 7 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Church of Geist on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel.
